Recognizing her potential as a singer several record producers like Michael Zager in 1980 and Elektra Records in 1981 approached her to sign her. Finally in 1983 Houston made the deal with Arista Records when she attracted the attention of Clive Davis while singing in a nightclub in New York City along with her mother.

Whitney Houston released her first self-titled album, "Whitney Houston" in 1985, which became one of the biggest hits worldwide in the history of music topping all the musical charts in U.S., United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.
For thirteen years, it was the best-selling debut album by a female artist ever. Thrilled by its success, Whitney embarked on world tour in 1986 aptly naming the tour 'The Greatest Love Tour' after its single the 'Greatest Love of All'.
