Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey. She was named after actress Whitney Blake. Her parents John and Cissy Houston raised her in a Baptist background but Houston also attended Pentecostal church. She pursued her education in a Roman Catholic high school, Mount Saint Dominic Academy.
Emulating her mother, eleven-year-old Houston started singing as a soloist in the junior gospel choir at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. Noticing her incredible vocal powers and beautiful voice her mother Cissy Houston, cousin Dionne Warwick, and her god-mother, Aretha Franklin gave her the needed push and determination to chalk out a career in music.
